STATE FUNERAL, NATIONAL MOURNING TO BE HELD FOR PRESIDENT TRAN DAI QUANG

Vietnam will hold a state funeral and national mourning this week for President Tran Dai Quang, who died last week of a rare illness at age 61.

Flags will be flown at half-mast and entertainment venues shut for two days starting Sep 26. President Quang will be buried in his home village in northern Ninh Binh province, some 115 kilometers (72 miles) south of Hanoi the next day.

“His passing away is a great loss for our party, state and people,” the Communist Party of Vietnam said in a statement Sunday, adding that the funeral would be broadcast live. Buddhist prayer ceremonies were held over the weekend, including a gathering of hundreds of monks who bowed before a portrait of Quang in a Ho Chi Minh City pagoda on Sunday.

Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh has been named acting president – the first female in the position until a replacement is decided by an election at an unspecified date.

We were shocked and heartbroken to learn about the passing of H.E Tran Dai Quang, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. We would like to deeply express our sympathy to the family of the President, the Communist Party, the government and the people of Vietnam.
